Wish you were right, but unfortunately, it seems that they're seriously thinking about completely removing the Gopher protocol support. Please see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388195 (not the bug about proxy UI settings but the protocol itself, as a whole). Moreover, the bug title has just been changed from "Consider removing gopher protocol support for Firefox" to "Remove gopher protocol support for Firefox".
