It is not the same anymore I agree. The problem is that many installations have their systems run by personnel not at all familiar with UNIX much less the actual internals which were so much more visible in older versions. The day will come though when fsck, and other programs won't be able to magically make up for errors created by an increasingly sophisticated non-programmer environment. Who can say that he or she really remembers the magic numbers 606 and 655000 and what they meant to a terminally ill system running long ago. Very few of the people now responsible for maintaining and operating today's systems can. The days of the old 45 and 20 in the dimly lit basement room of the old library are destined to return.
