Another U of T site has a rogue 1.0 (MCTESQ was here), but this version has only one type of potion (confusion) and no wands and scrolls. It runs under Eunice, but only as System (VMS root equivalent), so is rather useless. We do not have source, but would dearly like to. Does anyone else out there know about wielding arrows which shoot past you from an arrow trap? If you identify these arrows, you find that about one in four or five has fantastic hitting and killing properties, typically +78556,+78556. Have we found something no one else has? ANY monster can be killed by a single blow from these arrows, giving you a good probability of killing an Umber Hulk even while flailing around totally confused. The approved technique for obtaining a magic arrow is to jump in and out of an arrow trap until an arrow shoots past you. Pick it up and wield it, just like any other weapon. Go and attempt to kill a minor monster with it -- if one blow doesn't kill, drop the arrow and try to get another. Be sure to watch your hit points while doing this, and have some spare food. Some arrow traps are better than others at yielding arrows. A scroll of genocide for the Umber Hulks makes you essentially invincible. Both of us have found the amulet (on Level 23) using this technique, and Isolde has been a total winner. When you emerge victorious, the system buys your magic arrow at great profit. One query to other total winners: did you get hungry on the way up? Isolde started back up from Level 30 carrying 11 rations of food and 4 fruits, but never got hungry once; whereas Toad started up from Level 23 with no food and was killed while fainting on the way back. Food is not worth very much when you get out, alas, and -5 plate mail subtracted 19,000-odd from Isolde's score, giving a final score of 649952 (#8 in our queue, incidentally). Victory to the Intrepid, Isolde the Fair (Chris Robertson) and Toad Terrific (Laura Creighton) utzoo!nonh utzoo!laura ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
