I know of people (like myself) who have to have something to listen to and others than can't stand anything playing while they work. To get things going, here are my preferences: while designing, or thinking about a bug, I like so-called "Ambient Music" (a term coined by Brian Eno and the basis for his AMBIENT record label, distributed in Canada by Polygram, and an interesting topic in itself). This music is generally played at low to moderate volume, and drifts in and out of one's consciousness. For coding, I like something fairly fast that I know well-- this keeps me from being bored yet can be ignored when it has to be. This preference may be due to my having to put up with primitive programming systems, however (this is not a comment on Unix; I do most of my work on other systems). If there's response, I'll try to be more specific (and comprehensive) with respect to my preferences. peter rowley, univ. of waterloo computer science club (decvax!watmath!csc) ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
