> I don't understand the incentive, here. Why are these people so concerned
> with removing UI elements that aren't even in the way? If a prompt came up
> every time you opened the browser asking for a Gopher proxy, it'd make
> sense, but come on... Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings? The
> "majority" of people don't even use proxies to begin with. It's almost as if
> these bug reports are made just so people can say they contributed to a
> Firefox build.
> I wonder if it's even worth fighting. I mean, it's 2007. If Mozilla felt the
> need to discontinue Gopher support, they'd have done it a long time ago.
> They could just end up ignoring these.

Wish you were right, but unfortunately, it seems that they're
seriously thinking about completely removing the Gopher protocol
support. Please see
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388195 (not the bug about
proxy UI settings but the protocol itself, as a whole). Moreover, the
bug title has just been changed from "Consider removing gopher
protocol support for Firefox" to "Remove gopher protocol support for
Firefox". Several patches are already attached and the target is Gecko
1.9, which means Firefox 3.
